Description : One of only a handful of Michelin-starred Japanese restaurants outside of Japan, there’s no doubting Umu is a top-quality operation, showcasing the cuisine of the royal city of Kyoto. Every ingredient is breathtakingly fresh & flavours are intense, so whatever you try from the extensive menu, your tastebuds should be thrilled; highlights include delectable foie gras sushi, barbecued Wagyu beef in hoba leaf, & grilled toro (fatty tuna) teriyaki. However, portion sizes are tiny, so multiple plates are needed for those with hearty appetites & bills can mount to eye-watering proportions. Still, judging by how busy the place is, many feel the prices are worth paying & certainly the good-looking setting & efficient service underscore Umu’s air of refinement. There are also superb wine & sake lists & staff are well versed in making recommendations from both these & the menu. For those wanting to sample Umu on the cheap, the set-price lunch options (£21-£35) are well worth a look. Wine List: The thing that first catches your eye is Umu’s selection of saké, which is one of the biggest in the country & crucially includes a large range by the glass. The rest of the list is expertly put together & balances the usual big names with fragrant, less fashionable styles of wine from Germany & Alsace that work with the food. Best Buy White 2004 Renski ‘E’ Riesling, Dveri-Pax, Slovenia, £35. Best Buy Red 2001 Le Pupille Morellino di Scansano, Tuscany, Italy, £25.
