The location (down a Docklands backstreet next to Excel) doesn’t scream destination dining, but with exceptional food, impressive drinks & charming service Kombu is worth the trek. The sharply designed interior provides the backdrop for a polished menu which mixes classic sushi & sashimi options with the avant-garde – think foie gras with sweet & sour plum sauce. Perfectly seared tuna served with a ponzu relish was expertly executed, the relish cutting beautifully through the silky slices of fish. Mains were just as good. An almost lobster-sized Madagascan tiger prawn came lightly charred & served with a tangy chilli tomato relish, while Chilean sea bass with a yuzu truffle sauce found tender fish enhanced by the subtle punch of truffle. Desserts maintain the standard &, if you’ve never tried sparkling sake, order a bottle here: it’s a great alternative to Champagne & a lovely match to the freshness of Kombu’s food.
