Canoeing and kayaking are two very similar sports by which they are both outdoor activities and involve paddling. Kayaks and canoes look similar; however there are some differences between the two, especially in its watercraft design.
Canoes are vessels that can hold more than one person while kayaks are meant for a single person. Kayaks have little space in them as they are closed but they can carry some gear in them, such as clothing, food and safety equipment.
Kayaks use paddles with two blades
Another difference between kayaks and canoes is the length of the watercraft. Generally, different models of canoes are similar in length with a minimal difference of a few feet. On the contrary, kayaks are long, slim and flat, and round bottomed without a keel. However, recently there have been some short kayaks designed due to popular sports like free styling and river running.
The paddle is the other piece of equipment used in canoeing and kayaking that differ, with canoes requiring a single or double bladed paddle whereas kayaks use paddles with two blades. When paddling a kayak, one has to sit with their legs in front of them while to propel a canoe, one has to kneel or sit on raised seats and paddle with more manipulation. It is only with the correct training that one can learn to paddle either a canoe or a kayak.
Getting in and out of a canoe or kayak
Those interested in kayaking and canoeing have to learn how to get in and out of the craft. As kayaks only have one opening, a person enters it after holding the sides of the craft and slipping their legs into it.
The same thing has to be repeated when getting out. Remember to stay close to the shore when getting in or out and ensure the kayak does not tip over while entering or getting out of it. On the contrary, it is much simpler to get in and out of a canoe as you just have to step in or out of one when you are next to the shore.
Enjoy nature at its best
The greatest benefit of kayaking and canoeing is that its sleek design makes it possible to go venturing into small canyons, tributaries and rocky places that are inaccessible by large boats. There are no motors to kayaks and canoes, which makes it possible to venture into waters without disturbing wildlife, therefore being able to enjoy nature at its best.
So as canoeing and kayaking are basically the same, it is up to you to decide between the two, based on your needs and which watercraft you are more comfortable handling.
